I submitted a Pen & Ink I had been working on. I was accepted and I am honored that my art will be displayed.

Compassion…Pass It On

I did not begin to pursue art until I was in my fifties. Pen & ink is the medium that intrigues me the most. I am constantly amazed at the way a few simplistic lines can make such a powerful statement. Most of my drawings relate to women and their surrounding circumstances.

Compassion…Pass it On started with 4 different pen and ink drawings. Each woman is embracing a child in need, in the same, very intense way.
With just a few strokes of the pen, the women are from different cultures.

After I completed the four drawings, I scanned them into my computer. I used Adobe Photoshop to pull the composition together creating a dramatic graphic design.

In America we are so saturated with images of poverty and violence, it is possible to become apathetic. That would be dangerous for the future of the world. We must not allow apathy to flourish. We need to awaken the compassion within.

People tell us they leave the book open on the coffee table and turn it to a new page everyday.

Rocky Mountain News Article:
“It’s rare that a self-published coffee-table book is so well-produced and charming that it would stand out among a pack of titles produced by professionals, but the Browns’ book is so enduring and unusual, we couldn’t leave it out. This book features photos the couple took during a five year period of hiking in Colorado, in which they captured images of rocks that look like faces. Some are stolid and literally stony-faced, others seem to be be showing great sorrow or joy- and all are accompanied by sayings from famous (and not so famous) people throughout history that perfectly complement their individual attitudes.”

“Why we love it: The idea seems wacky, we know. But these photos somehow give the spirit a lift, as if Mother Nature is letting readers in on a wonderful, whimsical secret. Amazingly rock solid.”

We have been having a great fall in Colorado. Randy and I decided to go for a hike and see the rock formation we think looks like a Native American Indian. It was a great day and the rock face is still intact.
These are the photos we took. Hope you take the time to notice it looks as though he has a headdress on. The rock is isolated. This entire formation reminds me of a Frank Howell painting.

The nose has separated from the face just a bit and we know one day we will go up there and the nose will be gone. For now he is beautiful sitting there on that mountain looking so wise and peaceful. Although Randy and I agree there is something sad about him as if he is thinking about what we are doing the this beautiful planet.

You can purchase this photo of the Native American Indian.
It only costs $10.00 and that includes shipping. You can place it in an 8″x10″ ready made frame.
It makes a great gift. I have been putting the photos in frames that are made of rough wood. It really complements the photo of the Indian.

Great hiking website!

I was Googling around the net and happened upon a great blog which outlines the different places you can hike all over the country - AwayFromTheGrind.com. In it you’ll find some of the most detailed (painstakingly so) ways to get to some of the prettiest places in the backwoods of Colorado.

As an example of what you might find nestled within:

Pointers: I suppose the most enjoyable way to take in this grandeur is to backpack the short distance to Cirque Meadows, spend the night and enjoy the view. Sunrise is really special.

While there are four campsites further up the trail they offer no vistas and camping is not allowed at Emmaline. The next morning scramble up the Emmaline trail free of pack, take in the wonder, and then hike down to get your gear and out to your vehicle by afternoon. Dinner on the deck at Mishawaka along the Poudre is always memorable.

I’ve been up towards the area he’s talking about, and he’s right - it’s incredible! Definitely head over and give the site a read right over here!

People have asked us about the spiritual rock formations we have found. I believe that everything in Nature has a spiritual connection. It is very calming just being outside with that beautiful blue sky above that Colorado is so well known for.

Of course the rock formation of Jesus is spiritual.

The Native American Indian rock would be another very spiritual rock formation.

The rock formation that looks like someone praying is beautiful.

“WE DO NOT NEED MAGIC TO TRANSFORM OUR WORLD.”
Below is a portion of the speech J.K. Rowling
delivered at Harvard University
June 2008

“So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

“You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.” – J.K. Rowling

In 2006 we wanted to publish a book titled Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey. We sent it to several publishers and of course we were turned down. We decided to self-publish. That decision would take us on entirely different journey. Lots of ups and downs. We really believed in the book so we pushed on. I am really glad we did. The Rocky Mountain News picked it as one of the top picks of 2007. It is still a long road ahead of us, but it has been worth it. Not only was it healing for us, people that have purchased the book have told us how looking through the book has been healing for them as well.
The book is filled with faces in rock formations matched with quotations to match their individual personalities. (Yes, when you look at them they do seem to have personalities).

This is a photo of a rock we put at the end of the book just for fun. Rock Bottom is a perfect title for it. It is a true work of art by Mother Nature.

I was so excited the day I discovered this quotation that matched so perfectly with a face that we found in a rock formation while hiking in the Colorado mountains. The quotation comes from the book “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan. By the way, if you haven’t read the book it is wonderful. Try to read it or at least see the movie.

Here is the quote:
“I did not lose myself all at once.
I rubbed out my face over the years
washing away my pain,
the same way carvings on stone
are worn down by water.”

Someone we know just ordered several copies of Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey to give out to their relatives. They had just suffered a loss of a member of their family. She will give the books as a gift to help them through the healing process. I am not suggesting our book will take away the pain. It will just be a part of the healing process. Looking through the book and trying to see the individual faces in the rocks is a right brain activity. The right brain is the healing side of the brain. CLICK HERE to read about right brain healing.

Over and over again people have ordered Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey for someone they know who is dealing with pain. Hiking in the Colorado mountains and finding all of the faces in the rock formations helped us work our way through a tragic event. Our hope was that the book would help others dealing with pain. Let’s face it, life can be hard. No one is immune from pain. We found that looking for the faces in the rock formations quieted our left brain and allowed our right brain to take over. What a wonderful sense of peace it provided us.

“Think
of all the beauty
still left around you
and
be happy.”

~Anne Frank
(1929-1945)
Holocaust Victim, Writer

It is not always possible for people to get out and hike. Try to do an activity that allows your right brain to take over. Of course art is a great one. Even if you think you can’t draw, just try doodling on a piece of paper. Observing Nature is a great way to quiet that left brain. If you can’t get out maybe just look closely at a plant or a flower inside your house. Just get in real close and observe the beauty of it. Do this activity several times a day to quiet your mind. It will help.
Use that right brain.

Also Randy and I will be hiking soon to look for more faces in the rocks. So bookmark this blog. We will put all new faces on this site for you to see. Also if you are hiking and find a face, think about emailing it to us and we will add it to the site. That way you can be a part of helping others through the healing process as well.

LOST

Stand still.
The trees ahead and bushes beside you are not lost.
Wherever you are is called Here,
And you must treat it as a powerful stranger,
Must ask permission to know it and be known.
The forest breathes. Listen.
It answers,
I have made this place around you.
If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here.
No two trees are the same to Raven.
No two branches are the same to Wren.
If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,
You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows
Where you are. You must let it find you.

We have seen some amazing trees in the Colorado mountains.
In the fall a lot of people take the scenic drives just to look at the color changes of the Aspen. They should get out of their car and sit on a rock next to the trees and be in the stillness. Just sit and observe the miracle of life surrounding them.

We have some photos of trees in Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey, even though it is a book of photos of images of faces in rock formations. The photo below is an example of a couple of pages from the book.

The quotation says:
The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes,
but in having new eyes.
– Marcel Proust
(1871-1922)

I am sure some people would just label the photo above as just some old dead wood.
If they would take the time to look at it without labeling it, they would notice the beauty of the movement of its lines and maybe wonder what changes it has been through. This would be a wonderful place to just sit down and experience the stillness.

If you would like to read more about our journey CLICK HERE and scroll down to find more of our story. Patti Thorn wrote a wonderful story describing our journey in the Rocky Mountain News titled The Spirit In The Stone.
Creating the book was a spiritual journey for Randy and I. Hiking in the mountains and finding the faces in rock formations could not have happened without being in that place of stillness. The miracle of life was unfolding all around us everytime we were able to quiet that little voice in our head.

Awaken to the beauty in Nature. That is what happened to us on our hikes. We had always enjoyed the beauty all around us. When we started to see the faces in the rock formations it caused us to slow down even more. We would be so taken in by the rocks surrounding us, time seemed to go away. It is a feeling like no other. All the problems in the world melt away.

We have not been hiking because it has been too cold for me. My circulation in my hands and feet is not what it used to be. The weather is changing now and I can’t wait to get up there among the rocks and look for more hidden treasures.

Oprah mentioned, in the webcast of A New Earth, she sat by a tree and felt the stillness Eckhart speaks of. I would like to share a face that we found in a rock formation. He is leaning agains’t the bottom of a tree with a wonderful look of contentment.

This photo is from the book Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey. Pages 55-56.
We think this guy looks so peaceful. Notice the twist at the top of the tree.

The quotation we paired with this face is:
You will find something more in woods than in books.
Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters.
Saint Bernard
(1090-1153)

If you listen to the webcast of A New Earth, (Chapter 1) with Eckhart Tolle and Oprah they discuss being in the stillness. Eckhart states that “Nature is the starting point”. Randy and I have certainly found that to be true. When we hiked and calmed our thoughts down, that is when we began to notice the faces in the rocks. They seemed to be everywhere looking back at us. It was as if a whole new world opened up to us. The stillness… such a wonderful place to be in your mind. You feel as if the weight of the world is lifted off your shoulders.

We found a rock formation that we call “weight of the world.” It looks as though he has the weight of the world on his head. He looks sad yet he is in a magnificient setting. Completely surrounded by the beauty of Nature. I think he symbolizes just what Eckhart is telling us. Stop continually going over the problems of the world in your head. Clear your mind and look around you. It is a beautiful world.

This photo is from our book Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey. Pages 70-71

The quotation we paired with this face is:
One word frees us all
of the weight and pain of life.
That word is LOVE.
Sophocles

I just found a great article titled Great Stone Faces by Andrew Alden. He sites humans in stones and objects and animals in stone. If you are interested CLICK HERE to go to his site.

He writes about famous sightings of rock formations and give you links so you can see photos of them.
Check it out.

In his article he also states, “There are lots of stone faces left in America.” Certainly our book Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey is proof of that.

In the last blog I mentioned that Randy took all of the photographs for our book “Faces In The Rocks.” He was extremely patient when we would go to the mountains of Colorado to look for rock formations that looked like faces. I didn’t have a camera so he took photos of the images of faces in the rocks that I found as well as the ones he found.

There are just a couple of photos in the book that I took. This one is my favorite. It is a photo of Randy looking back at a rock face. I love the shadowing on Randy’s face. We found the sun creating shadows on the rocks was key to identifying faces. When we hiked in the same area, a face would be there in the morning but not in the afternoon.

If you look closely at the face you will notice it is the face on the cover of our book “Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey. If you would like to see more pages from the book CLICK HERE.

It is really fun to take our friends up and show them some of the faces in the rock formations that are in the book. This is my best friend in Colorado and my best friend from California.

Of course Randy is the photographer and the rock formation is Cigarman on page 9 in our book “Faces In The Rocks”.

The quotation we paired with Cigarman:
I have made it a rule
never to smoke
more than one cigar
at a time.

Mark Twain
(1835-1910)

Listening to Chapter 1 of “A New Earth” podcast, Oprah mentioned the trees as a way of being in the stillness that Eckhart talks about.

I thought it would be fun to share with you some of the photos I have taken when I am in the stillness as well. I am going to post a couple of photos I took recently. I hope you enjoy them. If you can’t get out maybe this will be a way for you to enjoy the trees.

These are photos of aspen. Not the traditional way of looking at them. Details that most of the time are overlooked.

I love the way when a branch fall off the scarring looks like an eye looking back at you.

This one looked like a face looking out into the distance.

The bark had fallen away and left what looked like a watercolor painting.

Buying a digital camera opened up a whole new world for me. Now I would not have to worry about the cost of developing. I could take as many photos as I liked without having to pay to have them all developed. This allowed me to take a bunch more photos of each subject.

When I look through my camera lens now I can click away as I look closely at the subject. I notice details that I would otherwise not have taken the time to notice. It is a wonderful feeling. This is the feeling of stillness that is talked about by Oprah and Eckhart Tolle in their webcasts of “A New Earth”.
If you can afford it, I would suggest getting a digital camera and focusing in on things in a whole new way. It is great fun. I also suggest that you buy a backup battery. It is easy to take hundreds of photos at a time. Have fun.

We still go out and look for faces in rocks in the Colorado mountains. Instead of having one film camera we each have a digital camera. We have taken bunches of photos. Some of the faces are not so great. I prefer to think of them as not ready to appear. They may have a few hundred years to go in their formation.

This is one of our latest finds. I thought he had a great nose….

I started listening to the podcasts of Oprah and Eckhart Tolle discussing “A New Earth.” As I listened to chapter 1, it became clear to me that a lot of things he was saying related to the way we healed after the Columbine tragedy. If you are new to this blog, I will briefly explain.

After the Columbine tragedy our world as we knew it would be changed forever. We suffered from depression. To get away we began hiking in the Colorado Mountains. On the hikes, we began to see faces in the rock formations. We had been hiking in the mountains of Colorado for years and had never noticed the faces. I believe this new way of looking at the rocks was a gift at a time when we needed it the most.

When we hiked, we talked less and began to see faces everywhere. Looking at the rocks in a different way slowed us down and we would be in the place of stillness that Eckhart speaks of. When you are in this stillness nothing around you matters. You suddenly feel lighter and a weight will be lifted from your shoulders. You breathe differently and time is nonexistent. It is a wonderful place to be…in the moment.

I hope you can experience this sense of stillness for yourself. It is a wonderful place to be.
Remember you are never too old to change your life in a more peaceful way. I am 59 and my parents are in their 80’s.

This is a photo of my parents on one of our outings.

We self-published a book titled Faces In The Rocks / A Spiritual Journey. The Rocky Mountain News picked it as one of 50 favorite books of 2007. The article written by Patti thorn, books critic said, “Why we love it: The idea seems wacky we know. But these photos somehow give the spirit a lift, as if Mother Nature is letting readers in on a wonderful, whimsical secret. Amazingly rock solid.”
